Donations in kind for school projects

Gambia - Trip of last November and a container with donations in kind in March 2023

From November 23 to 28, 2022 Benno visited some projects in Gambia. Gambia is the smallest country in Africa and has a turbulent history. The English used their colony Gambia as a shipping port to ship slaves all over the world. Today, Gambia is surrounded by Senegal and stretches more or less along the Gambia River. There is almost no industry, only some agriculture, and tourism is only at a very low level. It is, therefore, difficult for all inhabitants to find a job. All the more important it is  to get a good school education. This was also the main reason why Benno set out for Gambia. A former professional football player ended his career in Serekunda - after the death of his father - and took over a school (Abbas Manneh Memorial Academy). There are about 500 students in this school who would otherwise have difficulty getting an appropriate education. During the visit we noticed that there are many things missing: The roofs are dilapidated so that it rains in during the rainy season, the teachers are underpaid and therefore not really motivated, teaching materials, tables, chairs and much more is missing...

Benno visited with Nicole from the "We Are One Supporting Community", also two other school projects. These were run by two Germans who have emigrated to Gambia. Heinz and Uwe are running the Kobisala School in Sanjang with 360 students, the Interior Academy in Brusubi with 320 students, Ceesay Nursery school with 90 students and the E.C. Noah's Ark Upper & Senior School Kitty with over 500 students. In their schools, they are trying to set up a medical treatment room in addition to the classroom. For this, everything that is needed in a normal family doctor's office and laboratory is missing. Malaria in particular is a constant problem for the inhabitants and often leads to worse symptoms of the disease. Medical care is either non-existent or very limited. The same applies to medicines and bandages.

Unfortunately, circumcision is still very widespread in Gambia. That is why Heinz and Uwe are trying to educate people about this. The holistic approach is also nice. Through a sewing shop, a bakery and a restaurant, they try to give the children a chance to start a career after school.

After their return, Nicole and Benno contacted some companies and schools to get donations in kind to supply to the schools and sickrooms - with great success!

Many thanks at this point to the donors' community and elementary school Baunach, Dachser Frankfurt, Mediengruppe Oberfranken, Hama, Messingschlager, elementary school in Thundorf in Lower Franconia and Rotary Club Forchheim.

We collected and collected until we had a 40" HQ container full. This was now loaded and put on its way on March 11, 2023. It is scheduled to arrive in Banjul, the capital of Gambia in May, where the contents will be distributed among the schools. FriendCircle WorldHelp supports the great school projects in Gambia by financing the transport of the container. We are happy to support the selfless efforts of the three initiators of the schools Sainey, Heinz and Uwe.
