Distribution of food in mountain villages

India, December 2024

Following the tour to some leprosy villages in eastern India in November 2024, a second tour was organized. After the team's return trip to Delhi, Jürgen and Alois traveled back to Germany. Frank arrived at the same time and, together with Alexandra and Sunny, they headed north to the foothills of the Himalayas. From Delhi they first went to Rishikesh. Here, Shurbeer Singh and a friend were already waiting for the team. The two had traveled a whole day by bus from the mountain villages. Shurbeer had visited over 1,000 families in remote villages in recent months, mostly on foot. He had meticulously compiled lists of families and individuals in need. Together, they visited several wholesalers and finalized the prices for rice and dhal (lentils). In total, 30 tons of rice and 7 tons of dhal were purchased (with a later supplement). The order was schdulesd to bedelivered to Kalimath (Uttarakhand state) in three trucks over the next few days. From there, the distribution began - partly on site and partly after an arduous journey with off-road vehicles into the mountains.

With the pictures in the gallery we would like to take you on the journey and share the experiences on site with you...

The gallery is currently still under construction.

The next day, the team flies back to Germany.
The return journey begins. From Kalimath via Rishikesh to Delhi.
Group photo with new shoes. The four of them had been waiting outside the store for almost half an hour before the agreed time ...
The soles of the shoes of all four children were worn through! You can see it in the photo on the right shoe in the heel area...
The morning before we leave, we buy shoes for the children of a widow.
There was also pasta and the refreshment is now very welcome...
A Typical dinner.
Every evening we reach Kalimath only after dark.
Return journey in the dark from the mountains to Kalimath.
After several days of distribution, a final photo with our team and some of the volunteers.
.
Others first take a shared cab up the mountains before walking the rest of the way home.
The neighbor (right) immediately agrees to transport the rice for the elderly lady. She then runs off with 50 kg (!) on her back - up the mountain!
.
Mules and donkeys help people with their daily transportation tasks...
.
The typical way in which heavy loads are carried here. In this case 25 kg on the back...

.
We continue higher and higher into the mountains to the next distribution points.
