Visiting people in need in Brazil
friends help friends in Brazil
In November, Benno and Tina traveled again to Brazil and visited the various friends and projects in person.
They mainly live on and around the former landfill site Jardim Gramacho in the state of Rio de Janeiro. They then traveled on to Jacunda and Belem
With the following lines and photos we would like to share our journey with you:
Jardim Gramacho which had been home to one of the largest landfills in the world, was closed in June 2012 after 34 years of operation. The landfill had been built in the 1970s in a wetland area with mangrove forests. Every day, 6,000 to 7,000 tons of waste were delivered from Rio, a city of six million people.
Today, the once beautiful natural area is still home to several thousand people. Hundreds are still busy collecting and recycling garbage because they have no alternative. The soil is toxic everywhere around the small huts, which are mostly made from discarded materials.
The contact persons there are again Jose, Adriana and Josie, who themselves live in the favelas of Rio. Jose lovingly cares for many people here and even gives some of his extremely low earnings to those in need. He leads Tina and Benno to those who have been living in difficult situations for a long time. With the photos and captions in the gallery, we would like to take you with us on our journey.
Impressions can be found in the photo album (in progress) and in our Telegram Kanal.
